Marple — SK6, on the edge of the Peak

Marple sits at the eastern edge of Stockport borough where the built-up area runs out into the Peak District. Stone-built period housing in the older centre, inter-war and post-war semis around it, and modern estates with proper driveways — a mix that keeps our work here varied.

Why our work in Marple is genuinely local

Steels Electrical covers Marple and the surrounding SK6 villages — Marple Bridge, Mellor, Compstall and High Lane. The town grew around the Peak Forest Canal and the Marple lock flight, and the housing reflects that: older stone properties near the canal and the centre, then successive waves of suburban building out toward the moor edge.

Typical response

Around 22 minutes from our Denton HQ in normal traffic. For genuine emergencies we aim to be on site the same hour.

Marple's housing splits fairly cleanly, and the split predicts the work. The older stone-built Victorian and Edwardian properties around the town centre and down toward Marple Bridge are where the rewires and consumer unit upgrades come from — solid stone and thick internal walls make cable routing the hard part of the job, and it's the reason a rewire on one of these takes longer than the same-sized house on a post-war estate. The inter-war and post-war semis further out are more often a consumer unit upgrade and an EICR rather than a full strip-out.

The modern detached estates on the outer edges of Marple are where most of our EV charger work here lands. Off-street parking is generous by Greater Manchester standards, which makes a home charge point straightforward — usually a wall-mounted unit on the house or garage with the supply run from a dedicated consumer unit. Garages are common here too, and a garage run changes the cable specification: a surface cable across a working garage wall wants a tougher sheath than standard twin and earth.

Public charging in Marple is limited to the Be.EV rapid chargers at the Chadwick Street car park. That is genuinely useful provision for a town this size, but it is one site — so if you have a driveway, a home charger is still the practical answer rather than the backup. Marple's outer estates almost all have the off-street parking to take one.

Marple Bridge is a designated conservation area. Stockport's own management plan for it recommended introducing an Article 4(2) Direction, and the council's Executive authorised the principle on 13 March 2006 — but we have not been able to confirm from the council's own published documents whether that direction was subsequently made and confirmed, and at least one third-party site states it as settled fact when the council's paperwork does not. If your property is in or near the Marple Bridge conservation area, check the current position for your address with Stockport Council before assuming external work is permitted development. (Checked September 2026.)

The canal and the river valley matter practically, not just scenically. Properties backing onto the Peak Forest Canal, the Goyt valley and the lower ground around Brabyns Park sit in damper conditions than the estates up the hill, and that shows up in outdoor installations — external sockets, garden lighting and garage supplies need the IP rating and the cable specification taking seriously rather than treating an outbuilding run as an indoor job that happens to be outside.

Pod Point Solo 3 7kW EV Charger Install — Marple

A homeowner in Marple asked us to fit a 7kW Pod Point Solo 3 so the car could charge on the driveway rather than being taken out to a public charger. The charge point went on the outside wall, with the supply taken from a new dedicated consumer unit inside the garage.

The garage run was wired in 6mm H07 rubber-sheathed cable. It's a tougher sheath than standard twin and earth, which is what you want on a surface run across a garage wall where cars, bikes and ladders go past it. The new unit carries its own 32A breaker for the charger and a surge protective device.

We also ran a separate Cat 6 back to the CT clamp in the meter box, so the charger can see what the rest of the house is drawing and pull its charge rate back rather than overloading the main fuse. Everything was tested and commissioned on site before we left.
