The short answer
A standard home EV charger installation takes around two to four hours. It runs longer — up to a full day — if the consumer unit needs upgrading, the cable run to the parking spot is long, or groundworks are needed to reach a detached garage or driveway bay. Most installs are done comfortably within a single visit.
For most homes, fitting a charge point is a quick, same-day job. A few property-specific factors can extend it, so it helps to know what to expect.
What happens on the day
A typical install involves mounting the charger, running the cable back to the consumer unit, fitting the necessary protection, and testing and commissioning the unit. For a straightforward job with the parking spot near the board, that is two to four hours.
What can make it longer
Allow more time if:
- Your consumer unit needs upgrading or has no spare way.
- The charger is a long way from the board.
- The earthing arrangement needs an upgrade.
- Trenching or groundworks are needed to reach the parking spot.
