Air Conditioning Power Supply in 4mm SWA — Glossop
A dedicated power supply for a new air conditioning unit in Glossop: a sub-board in the garage with its own RCBO and surge protection, then 4mm SWA clipped direct externally to a weatherproof 40A rotary isolator ready for the AC install.
What we did on this Glossop job
The detail behind the project — what the client needed, how we approached it, and what was specified for the future.
A homeowner in Glossop was having an air conditioning unit fitted and needed the electrical side sorted first — a dedicated, properly protected supply run out to where the unit was going. Getting the power in place before the AC engineers arrive is the right order to do it in: they turn up to a live, isolated supply and can commission the unit straight away.
We started at a new sub-board in the garage, giving the air conditioning its own dedicated circuit rather than spurring off an existing one. The circuit sits on its own RCBO for fault and overload protection, with a surge protection device (SPD) fitted in the board too — worth having on any modern AC unit, as the electronics inside don't like voltage spikes from the grid or nearby lightning.
From there we ran the supply in 4mm steel-wire-armoured (SWA) cable, clipped direct along the outside of the property on proper cleats. SWA is the right cable for an external run — the steel armour gives mechanical protection against garden tools, ladders and general knocks, and it's built to live outdoors for decades. The run terminates into a weatherproof (IP-rated) 40A rotary isolator mounted right by the unit's location, so the AC can be safely isolated locally for servicing without anyone having to go back to the consumer unit.
The whole installation was carried out and tested to the 18th Edition wiring regulations (BS 7671) and issued with an Electrical Installation Certificate. Air conditioning is getting more and more popular in UK homes, and the electrical supply is a job for a qualified electrician — done properly, on its own protected circuit, with the right cable and local isolation.
